Epiphany Season Sermons (2005)

Service: Date: January 30, 2005 Liturgical Day: The Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany Sermon Title: Justice, Kindness, Humility

Summary: The Prophet Micah calls all believers to "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God." This is a difficult calling -- especially for those of us who are wealthy (and whose good fortune is dependant on the bad fortune of others). But we pray for the Holy Spirit to transform our hearts, and we delight in the glimpses we have in this life of justice, kindness, and humility."

Date: January 9, 2005 Liturgical Day: The Baptism of Our Lord Sermon Title: A Theology of the Cross

Summary: Many are asking "Where was God?" in the midst of the terrible devastation of the South Asia Tsunami. This is an important question, and one we need to be prepared to discuss. These are opportunities to witness to an important Lutheran tradition: the Theology of the Cross. God is not some cosmic vending machine who provides a way out of the suffering of this world. God instead meets us in the midst of our brokenness, and empowers us to move forward with faith and strength. God was present in the Tsunami, and continues to be so in the recovery, working through faithful people to provide hope in the midst of people's deepest hurt.
