Sermon; The 1st Sunday in Lent: "Through Lent to the Heart of God"
Date: March 10, 2019
Liturgical Day: The 1st Sunday in Lent; Year C
Lent is traditionally a season when God’s people take stock of the ways in which we fall short of the expectations God has for us. We ask ourselves what particular sins, or habits, or prejudices separate us from God, intending to understand (and experience!) more clearly the grace that God desires to share with us. It can lead to a pessimistic view of human nature, and our own personal worth. But this “determined honesty” was never intended to be the purpose of Lent — only a vehicle that can guide us into the heart of God. This year, let’s enter into Lent deeply hopeful for the possibility that it might help us draw nearer to God, and God’s love for us.
