Sermon; The 5th Sunday in Lent: "Extravagance and Generosity"
Date: April 7, 2019
Liturgical Day: The 5th Sunday in Lent; Year C
Many of us grew up with notions of humility and modesty, and they shaped the way we lived as followers of Jesus. This week’s Gospel lesson presents us with the image of an extravagant and expensive gift Mary gives to Jesus when she anoints his feet with a precious perfume and dries them with her hair. Judas complains, but Jesus commends. Mary’s gift is a public attestation of her devotion to Jesus, and a proclamation of the love he has come to share with all the world. How might our gifts be the same: a sign of our love for God, and an honoring of God’s love for the world?
