Sermon; The Feast of Pentecost: "A Spirited Church"
Date: June 9, 2019
Liturgical Day: The Feast of Pentecost; Year C
Communication can be difficult even in the best of circumstances. These days we are more aware of barriers between people than we have been for generations. Yet Jesus both calls us to overcome these barriers, and models for us what it looks like. Some fifty days after that first Easter morning, the disciples were barricaded in their safe place, afraid that those who harmed Jesus might do the same to them. There were linguistic, cultural and social barriers in the city that day, but perhaps the greatest barrier was their own fear. Yet the Spirit overcame them all, and moved through them to share a message of good news with all who were there. A message that has been shared with us. A message that the Spirit will assist us in sharing. We pray that our hearts might be opened to this work of the Holy Spirit.
