Sermon; The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost: "Being Rich Toward God"
Date: August 4, 2019
Liturgical Day: The Eighth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 13C)
In today’s Gospel lesson, the complaint of a greedy heir (see v. 15) occasions the Parable of the Rich Fool. The wealthy and successful landowner is thoughtful about preparing for his future, but about almost nothing else. His wealth, and the opportunity to trust in it for security, has entirely captured his mind and his heart. Jesus teaches us not that prosperity is bad, but that it can crowd out a love for God, can make it impossible to be rich toward God, and can prevent us from experiencing a healthy and faithful life.
