Sermon; The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost: "We Have Only Done..."
Date: October 6, 2019
Liturgical Day: The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 22C)
Jesus calls his followers — all of his followers — to be aware of the impact they have on others, and to be committed to forgiving one another. This sounds like a terrific idea, and we might immediately hope to stay true to it in our own lives, but it isn’t always the easiest thing to do. We might, like the disciples, imagine that if we only had enough faith, we could succeed (as if it all depends on us). But in truth, it has less to do with our ability to live well and forgive often, and more to do on the ability God’s promise has to transform us, and guide us into faithfulness (as if it all depends on God).
Finally, Jesus calls us to trust in God. And know that as we put our trust in the one who loves us enough to die for us, that we will find the capacity to share that love with those who surround us in this world.
